Who could have predicted the YFD Classic Car Show would grow like this.... Lets look at the stats... At least 279 classic cars covered the fire department grounds and the entire school parking lot... Thanks to the school administration and security staff for allowing us to use their grounds for additional parking... At least 650 classic car owners, their families, and spectators walked the area admiring the classic cars... Lots and lots and lots of burgers, dogs, and bbq'd corn on the cob came off the grill... That's right, corn on the cob... Someone dropped off, donated, a bushel of corn and it became an immediate hit... And hold on to your hats, the 50/50 broke the $1000.00 threshold, yup, Kenny took in $1020.00 at the 50/50 table... We have seen some spectacular cars at the show and each week we see more... Some of the highlights of the night were of course the Car Hops, well "Car Hop"... Ruby handled the night by herself, Jess was there for support only, she had given her skates to a friend during a recent competition and was skate-less... The big 50/50 winner was Dan Russo, taking home a wopping $510.00... Butch Stroud won the free oil change at Genes 112 Service Station, while Richard Miller won the $25.00 gift certificate from the Wellington Bar & Grill... Gene Burbol and Pete Sweezey provide theses prized each week, thanks guys... By the way, for those of you who made it Riverhead Raceway on Sunday, Gene took 1st place in his division... Walter Stroud Jr. had some electrical problems with his "49 car" and didn't finish the race, next time Walt... The two remaining winners of the 50/50 last night were Gene Burbol, who took home the Ignition Nation hat, and Rachael Hines (TJ's sister) left with the Long Ireland Beer Company T-shirt... We have two (2) car shows left for this season, the last show taking place on 08/31/10, but don't worry folks, I have been told that we will open the gates once again starting in May of 2011, date to be announced, and promise to be better than ever... Just a reminder, this Saturday, August 21, at the Calverton Linx, Edwards Ave., Calverton, the East Moriches FD will have the Fabulous Grease Band playing starting at 7:30pm, doors open at 6:30pm... Tickets can be purchased at the for $20.00... Next Saturday, August 28, the Mill House Inn will hold their annual canoe race and after party starting at 2:00pm... Well, all the feedback we have been getting about the car show has been positive... Oh, thanks goes out to Chief Matt Quinn for having the parking lot light repaired, several classic car owners and their families stayed under the lights long past last call, they were still camped out on their lawn chairs long after I left the YFD last night... Well, we hope to see all of you next Tuesday for another great night... Happy cruising......
